Spandau, Berlin - BMW Motorrad says it will rely increasingly on small-cylinder models and even electric bicycles to achieve sales growth over the next five years.

It plans to sell 200 000 motorcycles a year by 2020 compared to 120 000 in 2014.

Its new made-in-India G310R model, introduced on Wednesday, was specifically tailored for fast-growing Asian and South American markets, it said, adding that Asia and South America were the main target zones for accelerated growth.

BMW, which has a cult following for its large-capacity motorcycles, said it would now also focus on models smaller than 500cc.

BMW Motorrad Stephan Schaller said the company would also focus increasingly on urban mobility, especially with electric bicycles; big-bore bikes would, however, remain BMW's core business.

BMW sold 121 000 motorcycles between January and October of this year.
