The US-spec version of the Ford Kuga, called Escape over there, has been given a nip and tuck and given that this is a global model, the Euro-spec Kuga model that's sold in SA should be treated to similar upgrades in the not-too-distant future.
Following Ford's latest design moods, the visual highlight of the upgrade is a more macho-looking front end, featuring a large new grille that bears a resemblance to that on the new Ford Everest. New taillights and a redesigned tailgate create a neater look at the rear.
The real big news is on the geek front, where the Escape becomes the first Ford to allow customers to control their vehicles from afar using a smartphone app. Oh wait, did you remember to lock your car? With Sync Connect you can do it from afar, or unlock the car for someone else. You can even start the engine and check things like fuel level - or just find the car if you forgot where you parked.
Other available gadgets include adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with brake support and enhanced auto park assist, although it's too early to say whether all the aforementioned gadgets will be fitted to SA-spec models.
The US market Escape also receives two upgraded EcoBoost turbopetrol engines linked to idle stop systems. The new 1.5-litre unit is good for 134kW and 251Nm while the 2-litre is rated at 183kW and 373Nm.
