Renault has rounded off its revised-for-2013 Fluence line-up with a continuously variable transmission version of the higher-specced Dynamique model.

Petrol-powered like its two siblings - the entry-level Expression 1.6 and the upmarket Dynamique 2.0 - Renault is relying on its quiet running and seamless transmission to make it stand out in the traditionally conservative C-segment sedan segment.

Because it avoids gearshift shocks and maintains optimum torque for any given power demand, says the maker, it enables the engine to run at its most efficient revs and in fact reduces fuel consumption by three percent compared to its manual counterpart.

We'll take that under advisement until we've driven one.

The Dynamique CVT's two-litre, 16-valve engine is rated for 103kW at 6000rpm and 195Nm at 3700rpm, taking it from 0-100km/h in a claimed 10.1 seconds and on to 195km/h, with a combined-cycle fuel consumption of 7.7 litres per 100km.

Standard kit includes cruise control with speed limiter, LED daytime running lights, auto rain and light sensors, front and rear parking sensors, a 180mm touch screen with TomTom navigation, lumbar setting on driver & front passenger seats and a hands-free keyless card system with a coded immobiliser system.

All three Fluence variants come with Renault's standard five-year or 150 000km mechanical warranty and a five-year or 90 000km service plan (optionally upgradable to a full maintenance plan), roadside assistance plan, fixed-price servicing costs at 15 000km intervals and guaranteed parts availability - failing which Renault SA promises to find you a mobility solution until parts become available.
