As motoring institutions go, you don’t get much more ingrained than Ken Corkett.

Everyone’s favourite backyard mechanic has been writing his freelance technical column in our newspaper supplements (Star, Mercury and Pretoria News Motoring and Drive Times) longer than almost anyone can remember.

If you wanted to know anything from the best time to change your cambelt, to caring for cylinder heads, Ken was your man with his vast mechanical knowledge.

However, after over four decades of penning his weekly column for us, Ken has decided it’s finally time to hang up his spanners and computer keyboard.

We wish Ken all the best in his retirement, and bid him many happy miles sitting in (rather than lying under) his old ‘84 Jaguar XJ6.

As one institution ends, we welcome another.

Sagie Moodley is a workshop owner and radio personality best known for his partnership with Adam Ford on 702 Talk Radio’s “A Word On Cars”, with the duo having recently moved their show to the Midrand community radio station Mix FM on 93.8.

Sagie has agreed to become our new spanner-man, and while his column will still cover some backyard-mechanic issues it will be more consumer-focussed, offering advice on anything from buying and servicing used cars, to what the Consumer Protection Act means to you – all in his inimitable straight-talking style.

Click here to read his first column.

And if you’re having trouble with a repair or need some used-car advice, he’ll be happy to try and offer a solution.
