Volvo’s XC60 is taking a firm stance against shiny chrome with the release new Black Edition in South Africa.

Just 23 units will be reaching local shores, starting at R1,092,500 for the B5 Plus Black Edition. The edition will also be available in ‘Recharge’ plug-in hybrid (PHEV) guise, with the Plus grade retailing at R1,364,000 and the Ultimate priced at R1,438,000.

So how much extra does it cost?

Those opting for the B4 version will be paying a premium of R61,000 over the base version, while PHEV customers will pay an extra R50,000 for their Black Edition of choice.

What that buys you is a number of unique details in addition to an Onyx Black exterior paint finish, which Volvo describes as a “deep metallic hue with a brilliant sparkle in strong daylight and a solid darkness in reduced light”.

Also setting the edition apart is a high-gloss black grille with a blacked-out Volvo “iron mark” logo as well as dark-finished Volvo lettering on the tailgate. There’s not an ounce of chrome in other words.

The high-gloss black theme also extends to the 21-inch, five-spoke alloy wheels that come standard on the limited edition.

Of course, you’re not going to find yellow, green or purple details inside the Black Edition. The vehicle comes with a charcoal headlining complemented by a charcoal-coloured leather and cloth upholstery combination, but customers can alternatively opt for an identically coloured ventilated Nappa leather upholstery.

“The XC60 plays an essential role in the Volvo Cars line-up both here in South Africa and worldwide, so we’re delighted to celebrate this important model’s sustained success with these exclusive new Black Edition derivatives,” said Volvo Car SA Managing Director Greg Maruszewski.

As a reminder, the “B4” engine is a mild hybrid 2.0-litre turbopetrol unit that produces 183kW and 350Nm, while the Recharge is a plug-in hybrid powertrain that pairs the latter engine with an electric motor for system outputs of 340kW and 709Nm.

As per the regular Volvo XC60 models, the edition is sold with a five-year or 100,000km warranty and maintenance plan.
