They might be from two completely different ends of the spectrum, but the original Mini and Porsche 911 are both legends in their own right.

Now Mini has paid tribute to the German sports car, on its 50th anniversary, with a photoshoot depicting the original 911 alongside the original Mini.

As Mini puts it: “Only a handful of cars can claim to have endured over such lengthy time spans, retaining their unmistakable identities despite all the nips, tucks and updates along the way.”

The 911 was first born as the Porsche 910 in 1963 and has evolved its way to the modern era through seven generations, with sales of over 800 000 units.

The original Mini saw light of day under BMC ownership way back in 1959, as an innovative front-wheel drive city car penned by Sir Alec Issigonis.

The British mite survived, in its original shape, until 2000 - just before BMW revived the brand with an all-new retro model that came before the Mini we know today.
