Adam and James.
That is the name of a home-made car being built in Atteridgeville, west of Pretoria.
It has taken James and Adam Simelane and David Kgomole 15 months to get this far, and there is still some way to go as they are waiting for an engine.
James said he came up with the idea “to show the world that we can do it even if we lack the basic material”.
“We used to make cars from wire in our childhood. The passion started from there. We are adults now and we have to do something bigger and better,” he said.
He approached his brother Adam who seemed unimpressed at first, “until we sat down and called on David to join us”.
“That’s when we gathered everything we had and started planning.”
David is the only matriculant in the group, and the drawing skills he learned at school came in handy.
“With the drawing skills I gained from school, I drew a sketch. Our plan was to make a car that was unique.
“We came up with our own name, shape and material, we wanted to show the world something it had never seen,” David said.
They have put a lot of time into the project and pumped in a lot of their own money, profits from their car wash.
Said Adam: “Everything in this car is new, we never salvaged any part for our project. The seats, dashboard and everything is different. We made them ourselves from raw material.”
They used hammers to shape corrugated iron for the bodyshell.
”We borrowed an engine and a battery and put them into our car to see if it could move, and surprisingly it moved forward and backward,” said Adam.
The trio intend completing the car and hope someone will see their talent and offer them work in the motor industry. - Pretoria News
