A Tsakane police sergeant is facing disciplinary action after she was caught on camera slapping a member of the public, who came to the police station to find answers.

In the short clip, that has gone viral on social media, a man is seen entering the police station.

He then questions police about a gender-based violence (GBV) case. He further questions police about their reasons for not assisting a woman who wanted to open a GBV case.

The man claims that the woman then fell asleep at the police station, after officers allegedly refused to help her open the case.

After a short confrontation, the police officer, wearing her South African Police Service (SAPS) uniform, walks up to the man, slaps and pushes him. She is then seen walking towards the person recording the incident and tries to take away the cellphone.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, said they have taken note of the video.

"This behaviour is uncalled for and the SAPS code of conduct advocates for clients to be treated with respect and integrity at all times. Both the sergeant and the member of the public have opened cases of assault and crimen injuria against each other.

"An internal disciplinary case will also be opened against the police sergeant," Nevhuhulwi said.
