LOOK: King Misuzulu’s backers claim victory after two rival royal prayers for the late King Goodwill Zwelithini

After a day of high drama in the Zulu royal family after its factions hosted two competing prayers to mark one year since the death of King Goodwill Zwelithini, backers of de facto king Misuzulu KaZwelithini claimed they had a bigger attendance.

The first prayer was held at KwaKhethomthandayo palace in Nongoma and was led by Prince Mbonisi Zulu, Prince Thokozani Zulu and Princess Thembi Zulu-Ndlovu of the so-called royal rebels.

A few kilometres away from this palace, a similar prayer was held at KwaKhangalemankengane palace that was attended by King Misuzulu, Inkosi Mangosuthu Buthelezi and senior royal family members like Queen Mavis Zungu (widow of King Bhekuzulu) and Prince Philemon Zulu of KwaFihlinqindi.

The royal prayer at KwaKhangalemankengane palace has concluded with backers of King Misuzulu KaZwelithini like Prince Chris claiming the balance of forces were in their favour.

When King Misuzulu kaZwelithini took to the podium he kicked off his address by saying the day to remember his late father brings mixed emotions for him and added that he is deeply touched.

King Misuzulu also decreed that March 12 will from now onwards would be commemorated.

He concluded his speech by pleading with people to pray for the monarch. He said, "all shall be fine."

He pledges that he will "support" King Misuzulu KaZwelithini until his death and asked the King’s siblings to render their support above everybody else.

Buthelezi said that he has news for King Misuzulu KaZwelithini from President Cyril Ramaphosa regarding his coronation. He later said "whether they like it or not" Misuzulu will be coronated as King.

Inkosi Mangosuthu Buthelezi, the Zulu monarch's traditional prime minister, has now taken the podium to introduce King Misuzulu KaZwelithini.

Making his remarks, Inkosi Phathisizwe Chiliza said he is praying for people to accept that there is only one throne. This was in an apparent reference to those who are challenging King Misuzulu kaZwelithini for the Zulu throne.

UPDATE: The prayer at KwaKhangalemankengane palace is now on its second part where the royal family has taken over from religious leaders.

In a veiled swiped at the Zulu royal rebels, Prince Thulani Zulu says all people should have come to this palace as it experienced two deaths - that of King Goodwill Zwelithini and Queen Mantfombi Dlamini-Zulu.

It's now a full house at KwaKhangalemankengane palace where members in support of King Misuzulu KaZwelithini are hosting their own prayer to remember the late King Goodwill Zwelithini.

The other prayer service is held by the Zulu royal rebels at KwaKhethomthandayo palace and is attended by three widows of the late King.
