Estate duty, capital gains tax and donations tax rates were left unchanged after this week’s Budget.

* Estate duty is levied at 20 percent of the estate after the R3.5 million exemption.

* Individuals currently pay capitals gains tax (CGT) on a third of any capital gains made. The first R30 000 of capital gains are excluded from the tax each year. In the year of your death, you are deemed to have disposed of all your assets, but in that year your CGT exemption is R300 000.

* Donations tax is levied at 20 percent of the property donated, but the first R100 000 you donate in any tax year is exempt.
