If you want to apply for the exchange control and tax amnesty on grey money, you need to get together a number of documents. The application form for the amnesty is now available on the amnesty unit's website, www.amnestyunit.gov.za

The application form sets out the documents you need. If you have cash offshore, you need to include a declaration giving a description and the value of the money on February 28, 2003. If you have bank accounts, call deposits or time (term) deposits, or any other short-term foreign asset, you will need an original or a certified copy of a statement of account as at February 28, 2003.

If you have financial instruments - including shares, stocks, bonds or debentures - listed on a recognised exchange, you need a statement of account and the price as quoted on the exchange on February 28, 2003. If you have other financial instruments not listed on a recognised exchange or unlisted shares, you need a valuation certificate as at February 28, 2003.

Likewise, if you have fixed property offshore, you need a valuation certificate as at that date. If you have foreign insurance policies, you need a valuation certificate from your insurer as at February 28, 2003.

If you have an investment in a collective scheme, such as a unit trust, you need a statement by the management company of the scheme. If you have intangible assets, such as patents or copyrights, you need a valuation certificate. For other foreign assets, you need to make a declaration.

If you are applying for tax relief, you also need to submit a statement of your assets and liabilities as at February 28, 2002 (or the last day of the last year of assessment before that), showing historical and estimated market values. You also need to disclose the receipts and accruals from your foreign asset for the tax year to February 28, 2003 (or earlier).
