According to the findings of the TopRatedCasinos survey, South Africa ranked seventh in the world for their interest in true crime content.
This includes books and literature, movies, podcasts as well as television shows and programmes.
Australia topped the list with a 9.85 out of 10 score, followed by the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada and the United States, which all featured in the top five.
Meanwhile, South Africa recorded a score of 9.03/10 for their interest in true crime contact while Brasil, India and Austria also featured in the top ten.
The data also showed that South Africans were more keen on true crime movies and television shows more than consuming the genre in the form of a book or other literature.
This trend appears to be similar for the other countries in the top ten, although interest in true crime podcasts are also increasing in countries like Ireland and the US.
In order for TopRatedCasinos to compile their findings, their in-house experts collated a list of the 20 most popular true crime series on Netflix from sources, such as Vulture and Netflix Todum. They then used Google Trends to find out search interest in the most recently released series on Netflix.
This was done by setting the location to worldwide, the time frame 2004-present, and ensuring that each series searched for came under a topic to ensure language differences did not affect results.
Experts also looked at true crime as a general topic, finding search trends for the topic within books and literature, programmes and tv shows, as well as films. From this data, a score out of 10 was assigned for each, and an overall score was given to determine the country most obsessed with true crime. All data was collected on 15/03/2022 and is subject to change.
