“I’m concerned about everyone’s form including mine,” Lance Klusener on DSG’s run

Paarl breezed through a five wicket win over DSG, who are at the bottom of the SA20 league after seven matches.

But “Zulu”, as Klusener is nicknamed, still believes his team can make the play-offs and pull off a miraculous trio of wins in their upcoming matches.

“We have incredible players who just haven’t found their form unfortunately and that's cricket sometimes.,” said Kluesener.

“But I think rather than dwelling on the past, we have an opportunity ahead of us.

“I’m pretty sure five wins will qualify us and that’s pretty much all we are interested in at the moment.

“With the quality we have in the dressing room, it just takes someone to light the fire and get them going.

“I think we need to make sure we dot the I’s and cross the T’s but I think there’s enough quality to get three from three [wins] at the moment.”

The rationale DSG management used to keep Quinton de Kock lower down the order earlier in the season was to try and keep a left-right batting combination at the crease during the middle of the innings.

De Kock opened the batting on Thursday evening and put up a fight early on, scoring 40/33.

Even last season's big swinging-samurai, Heinrich Klaasen, was pushed up the batting order from seventh to third on Thursday.

But Klaasen appeared to still be in the rough patch he’s found himself in (5/9). Klaasen did, however, win the catch of the match award for his effort removing Joe Root.

De Kock and Breetzke put up a decent 50/0 after the power play but once their wickets fell, the middle order seemed to crumble while little runs were put on the board.

It was Wiaan Mulder and Jon-Jon Smuts who came to the rescue and gave DSG a fighting chance with the ball.

The pair scored a 59 run partnership until Smuts was caught with a lbw by Eshan Malinga.

Paarl’s thunderous opening pair of Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Joe Root did not get off to their usual start (fortunately for DSG).

But Paarl’s middle order came through, with Rubin Hermann and Mitchell Van Buuren leading the charge.

Hermann put up a quick 44/22 to keep the run rate above the required amount.

Van Buuren anchored the middle half of Paarl’s innings, with his 41 from 41, leaving little work to the batsmen after him to hunt down the 143 run target.

“I don’t think we took too much pace off the bowl in that first power play,” cried DSG captain Keshav Maharaj.

“But in hindsight, should’ve, could’ve, would’ve won't help now. We just have to look forward to the next three games and hope the results are in our favour.

“You never know what can happens from there.”

A journalist asked Klusener if he was concerned about the team's recent form.

“I am concerned about everyone's form at the moment, including mine,” he replied.

“But I think we have enough talent in the squad to get going like I said.

“I have been in franchise cricket for a while and know that when a team picks up momentum late in a tournament, they are generally harder to stop.

“Yes we have work to do but that’s what keeps these players coming back.”
