AmaZulu FC president Sandile Zungu has laid down the gauntlet ahead of the new DStv Premiership season by saying he expects the club to return to continental football.

The KwaZulu-Natal based side endured a torrid 2023/24 campaign, where they ended the season outside of the top eight. However, that has not prevented Zungu from setting the bar high for Pablo Franco and his charges.

Zungu emphasised that AmaZulu want to compete in the CAF Champions League and added everybody knows what needs to be done to achieve that.

“We want to play in the CAF Champions League and everybody knows what needs to be done. I'm expecting the players to be fit for purpose," Zungu said in press conference in Durban on Monday.

"I'm expecting the administration to be fit for purpose and the technical team to be fit for purpose."

For Usuthu to secure qualification to Africa’s premier club competition, they will have to win the DStv Premiership, or qualify as runners-up. The club have only been able to finish as runners-up once in the modern era. That was when Benni McCarthy was in charge back in 2020.

Zungu also dismissed rumours that defenders Abbubaker Mobara and Thembela Sikhakhane have left the club, saying they were still part of the team.

"There have been a couple of rumours about a whole lot of things particularly around Mobara and Sikhakhane. I want to state categorically that they are part of our team," Zungu concluded.
