Orlando Pirates star Relebohile Mofokeng was named the Gauteng Sport Personality of the Year at the Gauteng Sports Awards in Johannesburg on Sunday.

The youngster claimed the top honour despite being up against some of South Africa's biggest sporting names such as UFC middleweight champion Dricus Du Plessis, Olympic gold medallist Tatjana Smith, Bafana captain Ronwen Williams, and African sprint king Akani Simbine.

The winner of the prestigious award was voted for by members of the public via SMS.

Mofokeng has been instrumental for Orlando Pirates this year, helping them win the MTN 8 and the Nedbank Cup.

In addition, he has been vital for the Soweto giants in the Betway Premiership, scoring one goal and providing two assists in seven appearances.

His impressive performances have earned him a call-up to the national team, where he recently played in Bafana Bafana's 3-0 win against South Sudan at the Cape Town Stadium last week.

Mofokeng will look to continue with his impressive performances for Pirates as they take on Algeria’ CR Belouizdad in CAF Champions League on Tuesday.
