SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt cut a relieved figure after his side needed extra time to overcome Cape Town Spurs 2-1, in their Nedbank Cup at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Wednesday evening.

SuperSport went a goal down in just the fifth minute of the clash to the side which find themselves second from bottom in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, as Therlo Moosa opened the scoring for the visitors.

To their credit, SuperSport were able to claw their way back to level the scores with Ime Okon netting before the break.

However, it would be just moments before the round of 16 clash went to penalties that Lebohang Maboe found the eventual winner.

'A lot of them played for me'

Though Hunt paid tribute to his troops for the character they showed in their comeback win, he also hinted that a number of Spurs players actually ‘learnt the ropes’ under his leadership.

“Good performance again, going a goal down and fighting … They got a lot of experience on their side, they got a lot of guys that played a lot of football, a lot of them played for me,” Hunt told SuperSportTV after the match.

“They settled in and made it difficult for us. The turnover is obviously going to be important for them, and we handled it very well.”

Ultimately, the manner of their last-ditch win mattered little in the knockout competition believed Hunt.

“There were one or two key moments that were scary, but we had a lot of opportunities around the box. We got to be a little bit better, but we got through; that’s the main thing, we got a little bit of momentum.”
