With winter in full throttle and most people pushing sustainable fashion, there has been a rise in crocheted hats.

Crafters and dressmakers are riding the crochet wave and making trendy, bouncy hats. But these hats are not your usual beanies, they look like bucket hats with ruffles and, of course, are handmade.

South African brand Studio Bananaaa recently launched a new collection, Mama’s Boy, which features stylish winter hats.

The creative director of the brand, Katleho Motaung, was inspired by his mother when dropping the collection of hand-crafted hats.

“Discover the unique story behind each Mama’s Boy crocheted hat, hand-crafted with love in Soweto. These hats are more than just accessories – they’re a celebration of joy and individuality,” said Motaung.

The designer is not the only one who makes such hats. Other creatives from Soweto, such as Dee’s Crochet, are also famous for their ruffle hats.

Besides hats, Dee’s Crochet has a range of stylish crochet pieces like scrunchies, bikini sets, cropped tops, beach dresses and more.

Seeing crochet become a big fashion trend is fulfilling because not only does it promote sustainability, but it also helps young people beat unemployment through passed down skills.
