The DA has hailed outgoing Chief Justice Raymond Zondo for leading the judiciary with great success. Advocate Glynnis Breytenbach, a Member of Parliament and the DA’s spokesperson on justice and constitutional development, said under the leadership of Chief Justice Zondo, key programmes were implemented to successfully transform the judiciary to ensure full representativity.

She said Chief Justice Zondo not only did effective work in the management of the judiciary, but he has also contributed substantially to the development of jurisprudence in South Africa.

“The Democratic Alliance is greatly appreciative of the contributions Chief Justice Zondo has made to South Africa and recognises him for his outstanding career. We wish him well in the next chapter of his life,” said Breytenbach.

On Tuesday night, a farewell dinner in honour of Chief Justice Zondo was held in Johannesburg. He will hang up his robe on August 31, marking the end of his judicial career that has spanned for 27 and a half years.

Breytenbach said that in 2012, Chief Justice Zondo was appointed as a justice to the Constitutional Court, and later in 2017 the deputy chief justice of the Republic of South Africa. In 2018, he led the State Capture Commission, a process that uncovered mountains of evidence exposing the extent to which our state has been captured.

“The exemplary work the chief justice did as the chairperson of this commission will have a lasting impact in restoring the dignity of our country,” added Breytenbach.

In 2022, Chief Justice Zondo was appointed chief justice by President Cyril Ramaphosa. Breytenbach said the incoming Justice Maya who will take over from Chief Justice Zondo has big shoes to fill.
