Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town Thabo Makgoba wants President Cyril Ramaphosa to be held accountable for the Phala Phala scandal, in which more than $4-million of alleged undeclared foreign currency was stolen from his farm in 2020.
Makgoba, who was speaking to SABC News, said this issue as well as the corruption matter involving former Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Zizi Kodwa, are some of the scandals that should be fully probed by law enforcement agencies.
“The Phala Phala and the issue of Zizi Kodwa and the one of Mapisa-Nqakula to be put on the table and to be concluded because we have heard snippets of information, and we do not know what is true and what is not. If we are to maintain the moral standards in the country, each one of us should not be above the law,” he said.
Last month, Kodwa was arrested for allegedly receiving R1.7 million in bribes from EOH boss Jehan Mackay between 2014 and 2015. The Hawks arrested Kodwa based on the recommendations of the Zondo Commission.
On the other hand, former National Assembly speaker, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, is accused of demanding bribes of R2.1 million between December 2016 and July 2019 from Nombasa Ntsondwa-Ndhlovu, the owner of a company contracted to secure a tender to transport army equipment back to South Africa from other parts of the continent.
On the issue of service delivery and the GNU, Makgoba said, “I would like to see the president having less commissions or if he has made, committed to time frames that must be very short and their outcomes must be seen to have addressed its recommendations. One of them is the Zondo Commission. The Zondo Commission spent a lot of millions. Some of us who are passionate about school and infrastructure feel the money could have been used better,” he said.
