A manhunt has been launched following chaos that erupted at Makwassie Stadium in North West during the Annual Fun Games and Music Festival when fans expressed their frustration over the unexpected absence of popular singer Makhadzi.

The discontent among festival-goers quickly escalated into violence, with reports indicating that a breach of contract between the festival’s promoter and the artist escalated into violent protests, leading to significant damage to the venue, estimated at R3 million.

Police have confirmed that a manhunt is under way following the incident, which occurred around 5.15am.

“Makwassie police launched a manhunt following malicious damage to property incidents. Reports suggest that attendees of the Annual Fun Games and Music Festival were unhappy when the lead singer did not show up and went on a rampage,” stated a police spokesperson.

The authorities have yet to make any arrests but are urging anyone with information to come forward.

In a statement from Makhadzi’s team, it was clarified that the popular artist was not informed of the event due to contractual obligations pertaining to payment. The promoter of the festival, known as Ismael, had agreed to a fee of R180,000 for her performance.

The contract explicitly required a 50% deposit in advance, alongside a full payment 14 days before the event. While the initial deposit was received, it was reported that the promoter failed to fulfil the arrangement within the stipulated time frame.

“Makhadzi and her travelling team are informed of events only after all payments have been confirmed,” the statement continued.

“We did not receive the balance within the 14-day period. We sincerely apologise to our dedicated fans in Makwassie and look forward to seeing you soon.”

This clarification comes amid rising tensions and disappointment among fervent supporters who had gathered for the performance.

Makhadzi, in a poignant video message addressing the chaos, expressed her concern about the turmoil. “I didn’t sleep enough; I was not fine. I was not happy about what happened to the show. I don’t blame people who did that,” she remarked, reflecting the sympathy she felt towards her fans in light of the unfortunate turn of events.
