Due to the demand for dance classes, the Nelson Mandela Youth and Community Centre in Chatsworth is extending a call for salsa, modern and hip-hop dance teachers to volunteer their time to provide free classes.

Clive Pillay, a volunteer at the centre, said the community centre currently held line and bhangra dance lessons as well as fitness classes. The lessons, he said, attracted more than 100 members of the community.

“All the classes are free and the turnout is great. We are trying to revive some of the classes, such as salsa. We also want to introduce hip-hop and modern dance to attract the youth. People of all ages can join any of the classes. We now need volunteer dance teachers."

Arthie Bachoo, 50, an attorney from Montford, said: "I joined the line and salsa classes in 2022 after I saw a poster and decided to join. Between work and taking care of my elderly parents, I have had no 'me time'.

"I always loved dancing but I was not confident to go on a dance floor, so I was initially shy and lacked confidence as I felt I had no rhythm. But I have come out of my shell and am confident enough to dance in front of a judge during grading.

“Dancing is something I never thought I would do. I urge all those who love dancing to join the classes. Dancing is a form of exercise and it relaxes my mind."

Line dancing classes are held every Saturday from 9am to 10am. Bhangra and fitness classes are on Wednesdays from 5.30pm to 6.30pm.
