THE Shosholoza Meyl, a division of the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa), will run a limited return service from Johannesburg to Durban, which will offer sleeper and economy class, dining lounges and bathrooms.

The train will leave Johannesburg on February 27 and depart from Durban back to Johannesburg on March 2. Passengers can take their own meals along.

Andiswa Makanda, spokesperson for Prasa, said due to the shortage of reliable locomotives and the condition of the inter-provincial rail network, the Shosholoza Meyl services had been rationalised to one route during the high peak period and as and when it was operationally possible to run on a line.

“We run services on rotation from Johannesburg to East London, Johannesburg to Musina, and Johannesburg to Durban. The safety and security of passengers is a priority. Security is available onboard the train, stations and along the routes. We are working with the SAPS. Booking in advance is essential as this aids the business with planning and passengers can avoid disappointment with a train fully booked. Future dates will be communicated once confirmed,” Makanda said.

Ticket options are R260 for economy and R540 for sleeper coaches.

Those interested can book by calling the Call Center number at 080 122 9091 or 011 013 0231/2/3. Patrons can also book via WhatsApp on 060 567 2272 or visit the nearest Shosholoza Meyl office.
