A group of men with AK47s allegedly robbed a jewellery store at the Phoenix Plaza on Sunday morning.

Prem Balram, the head of Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa), said several response vehicles, a police vehicle and buildings were damaged by 15 suspects, who opened fire with high calibre rifles after robbing the jewellery store.

"A security officer was deprived of his firearm and a policeman and a civilian were shot by the suspects during the robbery," said Balram.

He said Rusa received the initial call for assistance from a community policing forum.

"Reaction officers converged on the scene and immediately came under attack. Several private security response officers and police officers swiftly responded to the scene and came under fire. A car chase and a gun battle ensued. The heavily armed suspects used AK47s. They managed to evade arrest."

Balram added that three getaway vehicles had been used.
