AT A media briefing on exam readiness, it was announced that KwaZulu-Natal aimed to improve its 86% pass rate from last year to a minimum of 90%, ideally 100%.
"To achieve this, the department developed the 2024 Academic Improvement Plan. It included accountability sessions for schools with below 40% pass rates, winter classes, hybrid camps, and spring boot camps," said Thamsanqa Ntuli, the Premier of KZN.
He said the department wanted to run an exam that was free of irregularity.
"The province has adequate measures in place to ensure there are no security breaches at examination printing centres."
Ntuli said the department was closely monitoring the 12 districts identified as high-risk examination centres. These include Pinetown, Umlazi and iLembe districts.
Ntuli also thanked teachers, organised labour, and stakeholders for their hard work and support.
"We are ready. Our readiness is the result of cooperation, collaborative work, and progressive partnership from all our stakeholders."
According to the department, 172 433 full-time and 34 986 part-time candidates are preparing to sit for the exams, which start on Monday.
They will write English paper 3 and Afrikaans paper 3. The final paper will be Afrikaans paper 2 on November 25.
The Minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube, will release the NSC results on January 15, 2025, with KZN releasing its results the following day.
"We wish the Matric Class of 2024 the best of luck. Do your best and you will certainly deliver the best performance in the 2024 National Senior Certificate Examination," added Ntuli.
